우리는 이 시대를 어떻게 기록할까.
2019년 우리 시대 최악의 전염병이 창궐하였다. 그리고 어느새 2022년이 되었지만, 여전히 전염병은 사라지지 않고 있다. 역사 속 여러 전염병은 판타지 영화의 이야기처럼 우리에게 와닿지 않았었다. 그저 옛날 옛적 있었던 전설 같은 사건들일 뿐이었다. 누군가 전염병들 때문에 바뀐 문화나 역사에 관해 이야기해도 흥미롭게 들을 뿐 공감가는 이야기는 아니었다. 그러다 우리 시대에 등장한 전염병을 마주하니 일상은 송두리째 무너졌고 서로의 얼굴을 확인하기가 힘들 정도로 문화는 바뀌고 있다. 우리가 만난 전염병은 생각보다 많은 부분에서 삶을 변화시키고 새로운 문화를 만들거나 극단적인 단절을 초래하고 있다.
많은 이들이 전염병 속 일상이나 사람들의 생활 변화를 기록하고 있다. 사진이나 영상, 혹은 글을 이용하는 것이 가장 잘 담아낼 수 있는 방법일 것이다. 그러다 문득 우리가 지난 역사 속 이야기처럼 사람들에게 하여금 사건을 기록하게 한 생활의 변화나 문화 같은 것들을 떠올리게 되었다. 그들은 스스로가 기록하려는 의지를 갖고 시대를 담아낸 것이 아닌 자연스럽게 생긴 습관과 기억들이 시대의 흔적을 만들어 낸 것이지 않을까. 이렇듯 기록을 다른 관점에서 보고자 했다. 단순히 객관적인 자료가 아닌, 사람들이 일상에서 겪은 사건으로 인해 기억되는 행위의 방법으로 기록하는 것은 어떠할까.
열아홉왕관은 코로나-19를 다른 방법으로 읽어본 단어이다. 그리고 전시 제목(당신은 열아홉 왕관 전시에 참여하였습니다.)과 같이 개인에게 다가가 일상에 이벤트를 선사하는 것이 이 행위의 목표이다. 이 전시를 통해 관객은 작품을 선물 받는다. 소장자가 되는 사건이 일상속에 벌어지고 개인은 이때를 기억하게 하는 지점이 생기길 바란다. 이는 기억으로 기록을 시도하는 방법이다. 참여작가들의 작품은 팬데믹 시대 속 일상에 관한 주제로 만들어진 작품들이다. 이들은 총 100개의 작품을 만들어 내고 관객에게 전달한다. 관객은 전달받은 작품을 일상 속에서 관람하고 소장하는 행위를 취하게 되는데, 전시의 제목을 통해 단순히 작품을 전달 받은 것이 아닌, 전시에 참여하였다는 인식을 심고, 이 사건이 기억 속에서 책갈피의 역할이 된다면 기억으로의 기록이 작동하는 것으로 생각한다.
<당신은 열아홉완관 전시에 참여하였습니다.>는 단순히 작품을 개인에게 주는 것에 머물지 않고 전시를 참여한 인식을 제공하기 위한 전시 제목이다. 이는 1970년 김구림, 김차섭 작가의 <매스미디어의 유물>을 오마주한 것이다. 특정 행위를 제공하며 인식을 심어 스스로가 맞이한 사건이 무엇인지 인지하도록 유도하는 방법으로 “귀하는 <매스미디어의 유물>을 1일전에 감상하였습니다.”라는 문구를 활용한 사례에서 힌트를 얻었다.
이 전시 속 작품들은 <19-20-21-22>로 제작연도를 표기한다. 이는 우리가 코로나-19를 맞이한 시대를 하나의 시기로 인식할 수 있도록 한 방법이다. 작가가 캡션에 제작연도를 기록할 때, 그 해를 적는 것과 같이 이번 전시 속 작품들은 이 시대를 적어 팬데믹 시대에 만들어진 작품임을 선언하는 것이다.
혹자는 이것은 기록의 방법이 아니라고 하기도 한다. 매우 주관적인 행위가 어떻게 기록일 수 있냐는 이야기로 누군가는 되묻는다. 그래도 우리는 이렇게 시대를 기록해보려 한다.

How would we document the current era?
In 2019, a horrendous pandemic spread rampantly. The year has hastened to 2022 already but the prolonged contagion still lingers amongst us. Deadly disease in the history of mankind is far-fetched like a fantasy movie story. It is merely perceived in the shape of a folktale. Despite the changing culture and history caused by epidemics sounding like an interesting anecdotal event, it rarely draws a deep sympathy. Meanwhile, in the midst of the pandemic outbreak in our times, we are experiencing a thorough disruption of our everyday life along with inconvenient changes in our culture. The pandemic we have confronted is aggravating our lifestyle in most parts, inducing a new culture and even incurring a radical severance.
Many people are documenting the changes happening in people’s lives during the global pandemic. Photographs, videos, and writings are perhaps the most convincing means to capture the changes. I conjured up the changes in life and culture that have been documented for the purpose of recording the historical events. Rather than a strong will to document the times of their time, it may represent the vestiges of the era created by a naturally acquired habit and memory. Thus, a different perspective was incorporated in interpreting the records. What if the records embody the act of manifesting inscribed memory produced by real-life events rather than as a simple objective document?
Nineteen-crown is a coined term that refers to Covid-19. The purpose of the act is to provide an event in the daily life of individuals as indicated in the title of the exhibition ‘You participated in the Nineteen-crown exhibition.’ Through this exhibition, audiences receive the work as a gift. They experience an event of becoming an art collector which I envision event marks a point when the memory is created. It is the method of attempting the documentation based on a memory. The participating artists created the works with the subject of everyday life during the pandemic era. The artists created 100 pieces of works in total to present to the audiences. As audiences are offered a chance to appreciate and collect artworks in their everyday life, they not only receive the works but audiences are reminded that they are partaking in the exhibition. This event establishes in the memory like a bookmark which ultimately demonstrates the documentation upon memory.
<You participated in the Nineteen-crown exhibition.> is the title embracing the idea that the audiences participate in the exhibition apart from receiving the works. The exhibition pays homage to <Relics of Mass Media, 1970> by artists Kim Kulim and Kim Tchah Sup. It was inspired by the case of using the phrase “you appreciated relics of mass media a day ago” to arouse the awareness of the encountering event by inviting the audience in a certain action that awakens cognition. The works in this exhibition write the years of production <19-20-21-22>. It is a way of understanding the era of Covid-19 as an integrated period. When the artist marks the production year in the caption, it signifies that each work declares its production during the pandemic times.
